Pollinators play a vital role in the health and stability of ecosystems on a local and global scale. When thinking about pollinators one might think of bees alone, but pollinators can be bees, butterflies, birds, bats, or any small animal that transports pollen. When considering the services they provide and the role they play in biodiverse ecosystems, it is clear that supporting pollinators is in our best interest. In order to do this, there are several straightforward steps we as community members can take to increase pollinator health and habitat.

  1. Increase native pollinator-friendly plant species within the city.
  2. Partner with local businesses and organizations to help promote pollinators.
  3. Rally community support.

Partners in Pollination: Woodinville is a community alliance that represents the City of Woodinville, 21 Acres, Pollinator Pathway NW, Woodinville Rotary and Woodinville Garden Club. Our purpose is to raise awareness throughout Woodinville about the benefits of choosing native plant species when considering what to plant in yards, gardens, and containers.

In 2024, we are giving businesses the opportunity to rent and maintain a planter barrel filled with native and flowering plants that can be a friendly habitat for pollinators.

Details

  1. Each 27-inch planter is made from reclaimed wine barrels from Columbia Winery.
  2. The half-barrels are fitted with a user-friendly watering mechanism and stocked with a blend of native and showy plants that are beneficial to local pollinators.
  3. The plants are sourced from Oxbow Farms, Hima Nursery and several other area nurseries.
  4. The barrels will be set up and planted by volunteers in mid-late April.
  5. In the Fall, Pollinator Pathway volunteers will remove spent flowers and add Winter interest.
  6. Each barrel will contain a Pollinator Pathway NW sign with a QR code. The corresponding website will help you identify the plants involved in the project.
  7. Each wine barrel planter costs $150.
