The Woodinville Rotary Club has announced plans for their annual Spring Fling auction and this year’s theme is The Roaring 20’s. The auction is the club’s largest fundraising event, which will be held on April 29, 2023, and feature a “raise the paddle” campaign to support Bridge Receiving Center’s efforts to provide a healing start for children entering foster care.
The Bridge Receiving Center provides a safe and nurturing environment for children who have experienced trauma or abuse. The center aims to reduce the trauma of being removed from their homes and placed in foster care by providing a welcoming and supportive environment, with trained staff and volunteers who offer comfort and care.
“Every child deserves a safe and loving home, and the Bridge Receiving Center is doing incredible work to make that a reality for children in our community,” said Sandy Kallio, President of the Woodinville Rotary Club. “Rotary is a peace building service organization, so our missions are aligned. We are honored to support their efforts and we hope our community will join us in raising funds to help them continue their important work.”
The Spring Fling auction will feature a variety of items up for bid, including vacation packages, gift certificates, and unique experiences. The highlight of the evening will be the “raise the paddle” campaign, during which attendees can make a direct donation to the Bridge Receiving Center.
“We know that every dollar makes a difference, and we are committed to raising as much as we can to support this important cause,” said Marilyn McGill, Chair of the Spring Fling auction committee. “We encourage everyone to join us for a fun evening of fundraising, and to help us make a difference in the lives of children in our community.”
The Woodinville Rotary Club’s Spring Fling auction will be held on April 29th at the Inglewood Golf Club. For more information on the event, to purchase tickets or to make a donation in support of Rotary’s initiatives, please visit the club’s website at: https://woodinvillerotary.org/annual-fund-raising.
If you are unable to attend the auction, you can still make a donation directly to Bridge Receiving Center on their website at: https://bridgereceivingcenter.org/donate.
Article to appear in the Woodinville Weekly.

At our meeting today we enjoyed classification talks from our newest and one of our oldest members.
Ally Baehr filled us in on her life and exploits as a lifelong volunteer with everything from Girl Scouts to Make Way for Books, a literacy support program based in her old town of Tucson. She has a family member who was stricken with polio so Rotary’s worldwide Polio Plus program hit close to home. Ally has a long history in working with non-profits and has been an active member of Rotary for about three years. Her move to Woodinville will undoubtedly be a good thing for our club.
Bob Guide filled in with a talk about his slightly longer history. Bob emigrated from the Czech Republic in 1940 and was fortunate enough (and worked hard enough) to get his Masters and Ph.D. before working in chemical engineering for most of his career. Later this year he will be celebrating 50 years as a Rotarian. He told us about some of his Rotary activities, including a Country Store run by Longview Rotary that worked well to raise funds before EBay, Google, and some other new services put a serious dent in their business. That Club also sponsors the Tour de Blast bike ride, something that would clearly be more fun on a Harley or, as Pat Ford suggested, on an electric bike. Bob mentioned that our breakfast club is more relaxed than the noon club he was in before.
We enjoyed the company of Isaac Everett, who is visiting a few clubs to consider becoming a Rotarian. He was a guest of Pat Ford.
Our 35th anniversary soiree remains in a date-pending status. We really want to celebrate but will wait until we can do so safely.
There is an upcoming District 5030 project to improve the Duwamish River Riverbank on April 16, 2022 from 9:00am-1:00pm. There is a volunteer information and sign-up page that you can find here. Our resident expert is Erv DeSmet who can fill you in.
Our annual auction fundraiser is still set for April 23 and the committee could use some additional members. Please contact Marilyn McGill to sign up to help.
Our Board of Directors meeting will be next Wednesday, January 26th, 6:30PM at Andy’s house. Please let me know if you need the address. Those who are apparently healthy and feel safe and comfortable attending in person are welcome and encouraged to do so. For those who wish to attend via Zoom, that link will be the same as for our weekly breakfast meetings: https://zoom.us/j/95542099576?pwd=MlFHcnk4RUQzdjhENktkTUpDVkJIUT09
See you next week.

What a wonderful experience we had this morning! Twenty one members attended the first face to face (and hug to hug) meeting of our Club in 15 months. We also participated in a simplified breakfast which should reduce the cost of our meetings. Life is good!

Remember that there is a Tri-Club (Woodinville Rotory, Rotaract, and Interact) food drive at the Sammamish Valley Grange on May 29th.
Pat Ford is celebrating her birthday this Friday, May 14, 2021- She wore her pajama top that says, “Live what you love,” good words for all of us.
Our Speaker, Dave Hunter from Crown Bees – www.crownbees.com, dave@crownbees.com
Dave started out talking about his approach to agriculture which is to ask “why, what’s the root cause of this” in approaching any problems from the loss of bees to the lessening of crops. Bees are the only animal that is absolutely essential to our food supply. We are using more chemicals and the chemicals are not very selective. Roundup kills everything. Dave has found that growers change at the speed of a glacier and even when there is a good solution that will help them, they are agonizingly slow to adopt it.
Vision of a future
Dave mentioned an example of 30 people with 70 acres that was too much for them to keep up with so they dropped down to 17 acres and it is supporting all 30 of them.
What needs to change
Crown Bees Actions
Of around 4,000 specie of bees, only one, the European Honeybee is managed.
Neonicotinoids are treated plants that kill insects that eat on them. You have to ask for non-neonic plants.
